I wrote a review for Real Art Ways' really excellent show of contemporary West Indian art, at Big Red & Shiny. I loved the show, and it has had a lasting impression on me. Its politics are visceral, complicated, with powerfully executed works that show the artists' forces of will and material elegance. For me, it revivified the idea of a credible "identity politic" as sub-thematic in an art show. I'm afraid my writing was only barely able to convey that sense of urgent agency. But, whatever. I'm a painter not a writer.
my favorites:
Zak Ove
Lawrence Graham-Brown
Satch Hoyt
O'Neil Lawrence
Blue Curry
