A. O. Scott's remembrance of the iconic film auteur John Hughes is kind of touching and thoughtful, an appropriate tribute to such an influential figure. I hesitantly agree with the points raised by comparing the best of his teen comedies "Pretty in Pink" "Ferris Bueller" and "Sixteen Candles" to Jean Luc Godard's "Masculin-Feminin." This is most convincing when you consider the Godard/Karina relationship to the Hughes/Ringwald obsession.
The part of me that identifies with young radical French nihilists in 1960s Paris doesn't want to admit the obvious: that I also identify with white materialist suburban American teenagers being stupid and quirky. Whatevz.
