Ekwurtzel Joel VanderKamp and Joe Saphire's CATALOGUE exhibition series continues this weekend with projects by artists Samuel Ekwurtzel and Tim Lawless. Sam currently lives in Harlem where he is a first year MFA student at Columbia University and Tim is on the faculty in the media arts department at the Hartford Art School and lives in Norwich. They make artworks that range across sculpture, photography, time-based, video, found object, the works. When they were classmates together at the Hartford Art School several years ago, they ruled the sculpture department with an iron-fist. I admire them both very much, and it is going to be exciting to see them working within close proximity of one another once again.
From the beginning, their work has befuddled casual interpretation, lending it enigmatic perplexity and difficulty, while also hinting at some humble magic taking place behind a carefully constructed rebus. I think there is also a sense of confused and reverent awe in front of the sublime or the miraculous, while present in the living, real world. All of this done with surprising corporeity that can be both real and ephemeral.
It will be a nice night to catch up, see brand new art and drink with people you really like. Also, the last CATALOGUE I attended was so great and so fun, I don't know why everyone doesn't get their own practice/studio space and host interesting concept parties.
