at home.

Didn't leave the house once this weekend, except to go to work for three hours on Saturday. Its Sunday morning now and I can't see leaving today either. Forget it, especially that its snowing.

Thanksgiving Eve

My baby bought me a delicious steak and a bottle of wine at Trumbull Kitchen on Wednesday night at then we picked up long lost Victor to meet KNS at Barca for cocktails and dancing. It was fun. There were tons of Brazilians at Barca being sexy and exotic. I missed every other party I had planned on going to. We went over to Vibz too late to see Jovan play, unfortunately. When I walked in like, three huge doormen started pawing me up and down and demanding a $10 cover charge. Never ever pay covers in Hartford. Ever. Nobody earns that money and the management is desperate for you to be there anyway.

I heard that Vegas Blvd was crowded and fun. Tons and tons of regulars, plus hundreds of out-of-towners. I would have gone, but Brian F, KNS, Calvin and Victor were being so hilarious and I was happy/thankful (gay) to be were I was.

Hot Indian

Native Americans like Squanto are always portrayed as exotic and sexy. Also, Ang Lee's The Ice Storm is the only good Thanksgiving movie as far as I'm aware of.

VIBZ uptown tonight, plus all kinds of partying.

Hey everybody. Muse, Gabi, K Kelly, Brian F and I + whoever else would like to come on ride the train, are going out to Vibz Uptown this evening: Hartford's corniest nightclub. I love Vibz Uptown. We are going to go see total stunner Jovan Alexandre and his band play (above). Then we shall go where ever the night takes us because we're all slaves.

Tonight is the most popular drinking night of the year, so I'm sure that bars will be crowded. Apparently Koji downtown has been having stellar weekly parties that I have not yet been to and they'll be spinning one tonight. Vegas Blvd is having a party tonight as well, featuring the Get Humped party crew which I'll probably manage to get to for last call.

Face Value - Carol Padberg

What a long night yesterday was... I started off going down to New Haven to tour the Yale art school, a small New England liberal arts college, and talk to painters currently studying in the program. All I have to say is that Rochelle Feinstein is a babe and David Antonio Cruz is a star. I ran into old Vermont Studio Center friend Erika Wastrom who was also touring, and we both decided that we would rather languish in provincial obscurity than go to Yale (which we've been doing really well-- she lives on Cape Cod and me in Hartford). Oh well!

I rushed home so I could change my shoes and go to the opening at the Joseloff gallery at the University of Hartford. It's a great big show of recent photography called The Linked Ring. I didn't really catch the curatorial gist of it because the magic of Ellen Carey was blinding me and I could hardly hear or see anything over the din and luster of her conversationalism and captivating beauty. But I did gather that the show is probably worth another, more thoughtful visit.

After that I took Tim Riccio and Sarah Kelley home with me for another glass of wine and several costume changes before we went to Real Art Ways for Carol Padberg's opening celebration. We all looked really great and strangers wanted to fuck us.

Carol Padberg, Face Value, installation at Real Art Ways:

Here's just a partial view of Padberg's mural-size installation. I like art that removes itself and presents itself at the same time. There isn't exactly an art object to display. Its just flat vinyl and flocking material adhered directly to the wall. It is both decorative and substantive, organized and scattered. It is a mirror image of itself, reflecting dualities back and forth, employing text to say nothing. Carol mentioned Bauhaus, Dada and Surrealist creative exercises for developing new imagery. These are strains of modernism that have been occupying her work for some time.

Ultimately, however, Face Value is a party piece-- that is, art that takes the painting off the wall to make room for the party. A cue taken from the legendary 1965 Andy Warhol Philadelphia ICA exhibition, when Warhol's paintings were literally taken down for safety's sake and to accomodate a reception gone out of control.

Needless to say I like it, and I'd like it installed on my living room ceiling.
